Antique Silver | A silver floral bridal comb for Kathy
I just have to introduce you to Kathy. She is just gorgeous! Her wedding is coming up, and I’m dying to see photos of her big day!
Kathy contacted me to design a silver floral bridal comb she can wear in her medium length hair—which she is styling with long loose curls—positioned just behind and above her left ear.
The inspiration for Kathy’s comb initially came from her dress, an Art Deco number with a fabulous silver bejewelled bodice and a soft flowing ivory silk skirt. She loved elements of the YVES but wanted something a little more floral and in the size of the ARIES. When I first laid eyes on her beautiful dress, a hair comb from our 2015 collection came to mind which brought together all of Kathy’s favourite details (pictured below).
Now I know it’s not too sexy to talk about, but when designing bridal combs, you need to consider form and function as much as the exquisite detail and overall look. It’s a symbiotic relationship that needs to be balanced just right.
So in constructing Kathy’s bridal comb, I had a few functional factors to adhere to:
- Weight – with Kathy wearing her hair out, a bridal comb with too much weight would simply fall out
- Position – Kathy was to wear her comb on the left, which then influenced the whole design. Had she not known which side she wanted, I would have created something quite different and more symmetrical
- Proportions – as Kathy had no updo to position her comb behind, the comb needed to have a three-dimensional quality – so all you viewed was the delicate detail whether from the front or behind – while sitting flush with the hair.
The final design
The final design was a gorgeous petite silver floral bridal comb complete with freshwater pearl branches and Swarovski crystal leaves. The flowers are handcrafted from clay and perfectly lightweight. The comb peaks to the right to create an elegant line when worn on the left, with flowers covering the comb on both sides.
