An Evening in Florence

Traditions are ever evolving and we are firm believers that your wedding should be a reflection of you and your partner. For some brides, having ‘something old, something new, something borrowed something blue’ can be just as important as wearing a veil on their wedding day.

If a tradition doesn’t resonate with you, there’s no reason why you can’t create a new one or skip it altogether.

We have many brides who work with us to create heirloom pieces which they can pass onto their future daughters, sisters and loved ones. We love the sentiment and we love to be able to bring their vision to life.

Something blue’ for brides can include embroidery on the hem of your dress, blue shoes, blue lingerie, perhaps even a blue ribbon tied around your bouquet.

We love to incorporate tones of empire blue into our designs for its sophisticated charm, especially when set amongst antique silver and pearl details. The end result is a piece of beauty and regality.

Walk boldly down the aisles in these exquisite blue wedding headpieces:

I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t have a hair trial before my wedding. It was something that was important to me so I could visualise the overall look and to ensure I would feel comfortable on my big day.

But hair trials aren’t for everyone – many brides are unable to book a hair trial for a number of reasons. Lack of time, budget restrictions and logistics – think destination weddings in another country or on an exotic island. And other brides just might not feel the need to. It’s a personal decision and will depend on your circumstances and what you feel comfortable with.

If you are planning a local wedding and you will be using your regular hairdresser or hairstylist, you may not feel its necessary to book a trial.  If so, have confidence knowing that your regular stylist will have a good understanding of you, your vision, your hair type and face shape.

If you are planning a destination wedding, your wedding day hairstyle is really important – perhaps consider choosing a less complex hairstyle for peace of mind. Perhaps a beautiful blow wave, loose curls or even a simple bun to suit the venue and location of your wedding.

However, if you are seeking a more elaborate hairstyle, or one that’s different to what you’re used to, the following 5 tips may help ease your wedding day hair fears.

1. Do some research

Find inspiration images of hairstyles you love. Browse our Pinterest account or wedding magazines and gather hairstyles that you think will suit you, your hair type and bridal look.  It’s best to find a few different styles to choose from in case your favourite style doesn’t work with your hair type, length or face shape.

2. Chat to your wedding hair stylist

Either via email or over the phone well before your wedding day.

Send through your inspiration images and also information about your hair length, texture, thickness and face shape. This will help your hairstylist get a better understanding of who you are, your vision and what they will be working with on the day.
Browse your hairstylist’s portfolio to see if they have created similar styles for past brides. Otherwise, ask your hairstylist whether they have had much experience with this style and whether they think it will work with your hair type/length.

3. Be realistic

If you have thin medium length hair, a Kim K hairstyle will just disappoint you.  If you have naturally straight hair that won’t hold a curl, opt for hairstyles that won’t require lots of tight curls. Factor in additional time on the day so your hairstylist will have time to make adjustments.

4. Think practically

Is your venue in the middle of summer with the potential for high humidity? Or beachside? Or do you normally wear your hair up because you hate your hair getting in the way? Then updos might be more practical. The aim is for you to look your best but also to feel as comfortable as possible so pick a hairstyle that reflects you and will bring out your best. A happy and comfortable bride is a beautiful bride!

5. Plan your accessories

If you are planning to wear accessories in your hair, be sure to tell your hairstylist so they can plan for it.

Chat to your accessories designer to ensure the headpiece and fastener is suitable for your chosen hairstyle. They should be able to recommend a comb, clip or another attachment that will best suit your hairstyle and hair type.

Ensure your chosen hairstyle will support the weight of your headpiece. Most headpieces are lightweight however elaborate bridal hair pieces or extra long veils will need to be well supported.

If you are planning to wear long veil, practice wearing it around the house. It’s a bit like wearing in your new wedding shoes!

What happens when you fall in love with a few floral wedding headpieces and can’t decide which one to go for? Well, for US bride Tristan, she found herself in this exact situation when she discovered our CHERRY BLOSSOM set, and the MARION and the VERSAILLES headpieces.

When Tristan got in touch with her vision and predicament, we were instantly excited at the prospect of bringing together her favourite styles to create her perfect floral wedding headpiece. The styles she fell in love with all shared a number of common features: beautiful florals, an effortless regality and most importantly, their construction methods and aesthetics were similar which made it possible to bring her vision to life.

We believe that custom wedding accessories are just as important as having a wedding dress tailored and tweaked to suit your body shape and height. We all have different face shapes, hair thickness and types, and style, and we love to offer our brides the ability to tweak our designs so they are perfect for them.

Tristan's bridal look

Tristan had chosen an exquisite white wedding gown by Essence of Australia for her outdoor, garden wedding in Miami at a private Spanish style villa called Villa Woodbine.

Her bridal hairstyle is the epitome of style with hair mostly down and slightly pinned back with a boho style braid which she can tuck her veil into.

She shared pictures from her dress fitting of her wedding dress with her veil and we designed her hairpieces to take into account the width of her veil comb and the hairstyle she’d picked.

Combining a floral wedding headpiece with hair pins

The beauty of a larger headpiece and two matching pins is it will offer countless ways to style your hair. For Tristan, the larger floral headpiece is designed to frame her wedding veil and the two additional hair pins can be scattered as she pleases to add sense of whimsy. She can secure the pins at the ends of the piece to elongate the main headpiece or she can position them in the centre of the headpiece to fill it in and create more volume.

After the ceremony, Tristan can remove her veil and the hairpieces can stay in place or be restyled into a different configuration.

Interested in a bespoke headpiece?

We would love to work with you to bring your vision to life. If you have your heart set on a different combination of hairpieces, or perhaps would like to know how certain styles can be reworked to match your or our veils, get in touch. We’d love to work with you to create something beautiful.

We love to design pieces that can be worn a few different ways depending on our bride’s hairstyle. One of the latest pieces off the workbench is a fresh take on decadence. Exquisite in detailing and versatile with styling, we worked with bride Jessica to create a crystal wedding hair piece that could be worn two ways. For the ceremony, Jessica can wear it along the hairline as a headband or crown. For the reception, she can rotate it and style it from behind to finish a half up hairstyle.

The Lady Luxe headpiece features a floral arrangement that ticks all the right boxes. The overall silhouette is sleek and chic.  Take a closer look and the finer details expose freshwater pearl flowers and faceted crystal elements that offer sparkle and a touch of instant glamour.

We love the vine-like details that embodies our love for the botanicals with its delicacy and floral inclusions.

The inspiration

The inspiration for Jessica’s headpiece came from a photo she shared with us of a floral halo she fell in love with.

We reworked the design by combining it with our SOPHIA hair piece set, an expressive set that embodied a sense of bohemian wonder with its unconventional and whimsical detailing. The SOPHIA was inspired by wild roses and overgrown foliage, which translated beautifully to this versatile and breathtaking headpiece.

How to style this wedding headband

The Lady Luxe headpiece can be worn two ways – across the hair line as a headband or flip it over and wear it from behind to frame a half up hairstyle or updo. It’s a flexible and versatile design that can be manipulated to the shape of your bridal hairstyle or hair bun.

The distinctive crescent silhouette feels bold and beautiful and it gently tapers off at the sides to frame the face.

We love to pair it with modern wedding gowns, classic lace dresses and feminine silhouettes. We love to pair it with ladylike yet modern cap sleeves, illusion necklines, feminine sheer dresses, boho chic gowns, and floaty silhouettes.

When thinking hair, all romantic hairstyles will work – loose curls, low set buns or half up hairstyles.

Handcrafted to order to suit you

As this piece is handcrafted to order, it can be custom made to your head size and hairstyle.

We love to work with our brides to create wedding accessories that take into account their wedding dress, bridal hairstyle and jewellery. Feel free to send across any photos you have of your bridal look and we’d be happy to offer a recommendations.

1. Textured low updos

These modern updos are a fusion of braids and classic styles. Despite their intricacy, they don’t look overdone or overwhelming. They’re modern chic personified.

Bringing it all together

As these gorgeous updos are detailed-rich, opt for a delicate, yet equally detailed wedding comb or bridal hair pins to truly set your look off.

For a glamorous look, we love to pair textured updos with a backwards facing headpiece such as our MAYBELLE hair pin, JASMINE headpiece or MARQUISE comb.

2. The relaxed wedding bun

The wedding bun is more chic than ever with wispy tendrils and a low set profile. The chignon in 2018 is luxurious yet relaxed, and will take brides from garden soirees to formal gatherings.

Whether you have long or short hair, there’s a wedding bun for you. Your hairstylist can always add extensions to your hair if you’d prefer a fuller look.

3. The chic ponytail

This year we will see many brides wearing chic ponytails down the aisle. We’ll be seeing glamorous high set wavy ones positioned at the crown to low set ponies tied at the nape of the neck.

For a more polished look, plump up your pony and wrap a strand of hair to cover the elastic. Finish with a pony tail wrap, cuff or velvet ribbon.

4. The new half updo

Part half updo, part side-swept goddess, the new half updo is pure perfection. The braids and twists add that wow-factor, while the loose, wavy locks cascading down your back bring a softness and glamour.

For symmetry lovers, a romantic updo with fishtail detail is just as exquisite.

Bringing it all together

For those wanting to make a statement, you really can’t go past some scattered hair pins. We love an understated set like our BRIAR-ROSE hair pins.

And for you wedding veil lovers, this hairstyle would look gorgeous with a simple, chapel length veil like our AUDREY positioned either at the crown to create height or where your braid/twist ends in the middle. But why not take it up a notch, and look at embellished veil number such as our crystal trimmed chapel veil, ETOILE or pearl-detailed LOREN.

5. The half updo knot

Looking for something a little different, modern, yet still chic? May we introduce you to the half updo knot. For boho lovers, mess it up. Or for a more glam look, style it with loose waves and a smooth finish.

Bringing it all together

Depending on the thickness and volume of your hair, you could either add details to the side of your knot or directly to the knot itself. We love the idea of some delicate hair pin positioned into the bun to really create a beautiful focal point like our TEAROSE or scattered hair pins.

Position your wedding comb directly above your updo, if the knot volume isn’t too grand; or just underneath to create a beautiful waterfall-like image. Or add some shimmer to your look with our ETOILE crystal veil.

1. The half updo knot

Looking for something a little different, modern, yet still chic?  The half updo knot might be perfect for you. For boho lovers, experiment and mess it up. For a more glamorous and polished look, style it with soft waves and a smooth finish.

Bring it all together

  • Depending on the size of the knot, you might be able to give hair accessories a miss and focus on statement earrings to balance your look.
  • A simple hair pin or a delicate vine can create a beautiful focal point for simpler hairstyles.
  • Planning to wear a veil? Choose one that has been attached to a smaller comb like our AUDREY, THEODORE or MORNING MIST styles. Position it directly above your updo if the knot volume isn’t too grand.  Or, just underneath to create a beautiful waterfall-like feel.

2. The relaxed boho half upo

We love this style for its relaxed intricacy. Loosely inspired by the fishtail braid, this updated hairstyle feels unrestrained yet formal enough to wear on your wedding day.

Braids and plaits are perfect for brides with thin hair wanting to achieve some volume. Weave in some subtle extensions to help create a romantic updo, while providing that much sort after volume. We are a little obsessed with braids that overlap each other, yet sit flush against the crown.

  • For simple elegance, set dainty hair pins or a medium sized comb amongst your braids.
  • If you’re looking to add a touch of opulence and regality, pair this look with a wedding halo or crown.

Twisted perfection

Initially adored by bohemian and beachy brides, this sophisticated half updo works gloriously for those with natural (or stylist-set) curls. To create a look that showcases your cheekbones, start your twists above your ear level and create a little volume at your crown. For a more relaxed vibe, sit your twists a little lower – at or below ear height – and loosen your twists.

Bring it all together

  • Choose a wedding hair comb or vine that accentuates the twists and curves of your hairstyle.
  • A veil that’s attached to a comb (1.5-3.5 inches wide) will feel flattering and proportional.
  • A sheer drop veil will offer a beautiful transparency which will let your hairstyle shine through.

4. French twist inspired half up hairstyle or ponytail

This romantic updo is as effortless as it is chic.  This simple half updo hairstyle is brought to life with sculptural twists and folds, at times reminiscent of a French twist.

Bring it all together

  • Scatter hair pins along the curves and twists of your half up hairstyle
  • Nestle a hair comb into the back of your hair to add a touch of drama
  • Consider a veil that’s attached to a small hair comb (1.5-2 inches) to not overwhelm your hairstyle. Our favourite styles include the AUDREY and THEODORE.
  • A birdcage veil will draw attention to the front and sides of your face, showcasing your hairstyle.

Lovely Anna first contacted us about ordering a wedding comb for her upcoming nuptials. Her hectic schedule that included planning her wedding, finishing her PhD and living in rural Australia, made it difficult to coordinate the details of her special day.

Enter Ashley – her BFF. Ashley took over the organisation and design. Knowing Anna’s style, she decided to create her dream wedding comb and order it as a wedding gift. Serious #bffgoals right there.

Anna was completely on-board. She didn’t want to see any pictures, wanting the gift to be a complete surprise. Oh, to be a fly on the wall when she viewed it for the first time! And pass the tissues!

The inspiration

Initially inspired by ALESSIA for its silver colour palette and BLUSHING for its shape and size, we couldn’t help but reveal a sneak preview of our latest antique silver comb MARQUISE, before it was released. And she loved it!

The design

Based largely on the MARQUIS for its sense of sophisticated old world charm, we reworked the design with the addition of extra flowers and delicate pearl sprigs add fullness and width to her piece.

The design of the comb allows it to be worn to the side of an updo or Hollywood waves, or in the top of bun or chignon.

The perfect wedding gift

If, like Ashley, you want to help your close friend or relative create the wedding accessory of their dreams – get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.

If you’re a little like us, you’re a tad obsessed with Pinterest. It’s easy to spend hours exploring new hair and makeup artists, and we can’t resist the tutorials.

Here are our top 5 wedding updo tutorials we’re loving. Even if you don’t try them for your wedding day, they may be useful for your bridesmaids, engagement party or your bridal shower.

1. Dutch braid crown

Simple. Elegant. Textured. There’s the perfect amount of volume, texture and detail without feeling overwhelming.  Finish it with a set of hair pins tucked into the braids or a simple hair vine that meanders along the line of the braid.

2. Twisted chignon

Looking for a traditional wedding updo with a modern edge? We just love this twisted chignon. The understated twists are on trend, positioned low for to create a romantic silhouette, and easily accommodates a wedding veil and comb to elevate your whole look.

3. Messy ballet bun

We just love the softness of this ballet bun. It elongates the face and draws attention to the cheek bones and eyes.

Consider styling this look with a statement bridal comb or hair vine that wraps around the bun. For a look that adds to the effortless of this style, pin some delicate hair pins to the side for a touch of perfection.

Depending on the size of your bun, position a veil or comb above the bun to beautifully frame your hairstyle.

4. Low knotted bun

Continuing on our bridal bun journey, we can’t take our eyes off this low knotted version. The subtle back-combing at the crown creates a hint of height while the low position reduces any hair headaches. Add a soft, lace trimmed, chapel length veil and some bridal pins to complete your bridal look.

5. Boho braids

We love the way the braids on this updo frame the face and adds texture and detail.  How to accessorise this look? Less is more. Some delicate earrings will be the perfect accompaniment.
