When selecting a wedding crown, your crown should complement your wedding dress. A heavily embellished gown may pair well with a simpler crown, while a more understated dress can be beautifully accented with a statement piece.

There's very few opportunities in life when you can wear a crown.

A wedding crown is more than just a beautiful accessory; it’s a symbol of the regal elegance and timeless beauty that every bride embodies on her special day. Whether you’ve been dreaming of a fairytale wedding or simply want to add a touch of luxury to your bridal look, the right wedding crown can make all the difference.

With so many styles and options available, choosing the perfect wedding crown can feel overwhelming. In this post, we’ll guide you through the key factors to consider when selecting your crown, ensuring you find the perfect piece to complement your style and make you feel like royalty.

1. Understanding different styles of wedding crowns

Wedding crowns come in a variety of styles, each offering a unique aesthetic.

  • Classic tiara: A traditional choice, a tiara is often a small and dainty piece featuring crystals, pearls or gemstones. They evoke a timeless elegance and capture a princess-like aesthetic.
  • Floral crowns: Floral crowns can be constructed from fresh or faux flowers, creating a romantic and bohemian vibe. They are ideal for garden or outdoor weddings with their free-spirited detailing.
  • Wedding crowns: Wedding crowns and tiaras are terms that are often used interchangeably. Generally speaking, crowns are larger in size.

Your wedding dress plays a crucial role in determining the best crown style for you.

  • Embellished dresses: If your dress features a lot of detail or embellishments, opt for a simpler crown to avoid details clashing. A minimalist tiara with simple details works beautifully with embellished dresses as it will complement your dress without overpowering it.
  • Simple dresses: For a more understated gown, an ornate crown will add a pop of interest and drama to elevate your look.
  • Dress neckline: The neckline is an important detail which will influence your choice in crown. High necklines work well with simpler crowns. Strapless or off-the-shoulder dresses can accommodate more elaborate designs. Plunging necklines work well with crowns with peaks.

When it comes to styling your bridal look, referring back to your mood board is important to ensure your choices stay true to your original vision. The theme and setting of your wedding will be an important consideration to ensure you achieve the vibe you’re after.

  • Fairytale or royal theme: Classic tiaras with delicate and dainty detailing, featuring crystals or pearls, are a beautiful way to capture regality and a traditional spirit.
  • Bohemian and garden weddings: Floral crowns or vintage-inspired pieces will complement the relaxed and romantic vibe of these settings.
  • Modern weddings: Sleek and minimalist crowns will add a contemporary edge to your bridal look. Look for an unexpected take on the classics with baroque, keishi or smooth pearls or angular details.

Your wedding crown should perfectly frame your hair and face so your chosen hairstyle will be an important consideration.

  • Bridal updos: Wedding crowns pair beautifully with updos, providing a stable base for the headpiece to rest.
  • Loose hair or waves: Floral crowns and lightweight tiaras complement loose flowing hairstyles, adding a touch of softness and romance to your look.
  • Braids: Braided bridal hairstyles and crowns will create a textured and intricate look. Perfect for whimsical weddings.

We always notice that the moment a wedding crown is placed on a bride, she will walk with her head high with a confidence that only she knows.  It’s important to ensure your crown fits well and is secured in place. We recommend bobby pins or hair combs to secure the crown into your hair. Your hairstylist will be able to help you with the fitting to ensure it stays in place throughout the day.

Shaylee and Mitchell’s wedding day was a fun and colourful celebration of love, topped off with a scoop of nostalgia. Along with the charming chapel ceremony and reception held in a barn, there were also lawn games, live music and a gelato cart as part of the wedding day festivities. Surrounded by family and friends and the beautiful Gold Coast hinterland, Shaylee sparkled wearing her crystal and pearl FLEUR crown and an elegant, off the shoulder lace gown.

Above: A bespoke runway-worthy wedding veil for bride Monica

Goin' to the chapel

The ceremony, reception and all those fun activities took place at Summergrove Estate, a picturesque wedding venue on the NSW Tweed Coast.

“We chose Summergrove Estate as our venue because it is stunning yet simplistic, which is exactly our style. It is set on this incredible hillside and the view speaks for itself really! It’s actually the only venue we looked at and we couldn’t go past the beautiful, white chapel and barn. It was just perfect!” says Shaylee.

Love at first Sight

Shaylee always knew she was going to wear the FLEUR crown, even before she decided on her dress or hairstyle!

“Before I went dress shopping, I found the Tania Maras Instagram page while searching for inspiration for my look and instantly fell in love with the FLEUR crown when I saw it! I knew I wanted to wear this crown and make it the sparkly, special ‘something new’ for my day and based my hairstyle and all of my other accessories around this piece.”

For hair styling, Shaylee decided on a low ponytail with effortless curls and a single layer, cathedral length, tulle veil.

“I felt so beautiful while wearing FLEUR and now she is a heirloom and keepsake to wear on special occasions or milestones. So much love obviously goes into designing such delicate, handcrafted accessories.”

Special Moments

One of the most memorable and emotional moments for Shaylee was when she was wedding dress shopping with one of her bridesmaids and mum. She tried on a beautiful off the shoulder gown with a champagne undertone and intricate, ivory lace.

“My bridesmaid told me to try a dress on that she picked off the rack. I wasn’t really a fan of it but tried it on for fun anyway. As the attendant buttoned me up, I realised that it was seriously beautiful and ‘so me!’ I walked out of the changeroom and for the first time that day, my mum got a tear in her eye and I think I knew then that it was the one”.

The ceremony was held in the white chapel which has a glass window offering dramatic ocean and valley views. During the ceremony, the celebrant asked them to turn around and take in the scenery while making a wish for the future.

“That moment really allowed us to be present and the photo of that will forever remind us of our vows, our wish and our special ceremony.”

The couple organised to have a gelato cart for them and their guests to enjoy. There were three different flavours on the menu: lemon custard and strawberry (Shaylee’s favourite), watermelon (Mitchell’s favourite) and crowd pleaser, Ferrero Rocher.

“This was a must-have for our day as Mitchell and I both love ice cream! It was a massive hit with our guests and added to the fun, easy going, colourful vibe we wanted”.

Best Advice

“My biggest piece of advice for a couple planning their wedding would be to not sweat the small stuff. You are planning a day to celebrate your love for one another and that’s the most important thing. Have fun, compromise, don’t spend outside of your means and keep some sort of spreadsheet of what you have booked, paid for and when your bills are due (this is seriously a lifesaver). Just have fun and I promise you that your wedding day will feel perfect, whatever happens, and you truly will have the best day of your life.”

Bride Olivia dreamed of her wedding day with husband Jack to be “bursting with beautiful blooms”. With thoughtful styling and colour coordinating, their wedding flowers were even better than she imagined. Their floral arches, bouquets and centrepieces were truly beautiful and romantic, complementing the sentiment of the day.

The flowers weren’t your classic baby’s breath either – orchids, roses and pampas grass were used in the arrangements to create a look that was dreamy and modern. This theme ran throughout the wedding, especially in Olivia’s bridal look. She wore a figure-hugging, sparkly lace gown and our TEMPEST crown with delicate crystal and pearl details. She was surrounded by a tulle aura, with the MARAIS veil completing her divine look.

Setting the scene

Olivia and Jack married at The War Memorial, a historic lakefront venue in Michigan, USA. The venue boasts formal gardens, a ballroom and a striking facade for the ceremony backdrop.

“The War Memorial attracted me because it looks like an estate in France, which goes along with the romantic vibe I desired,” says Olivia.

The venue styling was understated and elegant, with a soft neutral palette and warm pops of colour.

“I also really liked the way that everything didn’t totally match… I didn’t want to have specific ‘wedding colours’, instead, I wanted a soft palette where everything was cohesive yet not matchy-matchy,” she says.

Along with the beautiful floral displays, another special detail for Olivia was the wedding favours. She printed out tags with some of her favourite love poems and tied them around little bottles of Casa Migos (Olivia and Jack’s favourite tequila).

Divine styling

Olivia’s natural goddess-like beauty was elevated in her flowy lace gown with soft drapes and her golden accessories.

“I knew I didn’t want a ‘classic’ bridal look – I wanted something a little sexier, something with sparkle and texture. I loved Inbal Dror’s styles and found they fit my body very well. When I saw the perfect gown hanging in the sample basement of a local bridal boutique, I knew it was the one!”

Our gold TEMPEST crown featuring freshwater pearl cluster and crystal vines, along with the sleek and floaty MARAIS veil, further emphasised Olivia’s heavenly presence.

“A gold detailed crown-meets-headpiece was something I always wanted since it is the perfect combo of boho and regal. I discovered Tania Maras on Pinterest and loved the way they styled their accessories in a modern way. Since my dress was so intricate, I didn’t want the veil to compete, which is why the MARAIS veil was perfect.”

Best Advice

“Start early, because the details really add up to one ‘wow’ moment if you have time to think through it all! And make sure you really articulate what you want with vendors. Our vendors were so great at taking our preferences into account while still using their artistry and genius to create a wedding that was even better than we imagined,” says Olivia.

Bride Kate melded her love of the tropics and Old Hollywood to create a hybrid theme that had all the glamour and style of a Wes Anderson movie set. Even the venue looked like it came straight from The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Although not set in Europe, Kate and Grant’s wedding took place in an equally exotic location. They were married at Hotel Galvez, a Texas (USA) hotel built in 1911 which overlooks the Gulf of Mexico. The hotel is grand and historic, with lots of palm trees, and this formed the basis of the wedding theme. With her ballgown, ROSEBURY crown and tropical bouquet, Kate’s glamorous bridal look was red-carpet ready!

The ‘Tropulence’ theme

The beachfront Hotel Galvez features lavish ballrooms and tropical gardens, and these features took centre stage when Kate was planning the wedding.

“The venue was so beautiful already that I really wanted to incorporate all those details and just turn it up a notch,” says Kate. “The theme ended up being Tropical Glam with a little bit of an Old Hollywood feel.  I was reading a wedding blog the other day and they were talking about a ‘Tropulence’ theme – Tropical Opulence. And I was like “That’s it!” I had no idea; I was just doing what I liked.”

#weddinggoals

To Kate’s surprise, her wedding dress was completely different to the dress she’d imagined wearing, which is why she suggests not rejecting dresses until you try them on first.

“If you would have asked me what kind of dress I was going to wear when I first got engaged, I would have told you all fitted, no poofyness, and no strapless because I didn’t want to be bothered with pulling up my dress all night! But after trying on some fit and flare type dresses – while I loved the way they looked – I felt like I couldn’t really move, walk, or sit down. I love to dance and one of the things I was most looking forward to about our wedding was our amazing band so I ended up going a different direction with my dress.”

Kate choose a strapless Reem Acra gown with an embellished lace bodice which sat snugly on her hips. The dress had a tulle skirt, which she detached for the reception, to reveal a flowy organza skirt.

“The tulle skirt had these layers of horsehair netting to give it this beautiful structure. One of the layers was pure glitter which really sold me because I’m extra like that.”

Kate was attracted to the gold tones and crystal details of the ROSEBURY crown, which beautifully matched the beading on her dress. She styled the crown closer to the back of her head, allowing strands of hair to frame her face.

“I chose Old Hollywood curls for my hairstyle. Inspiration was a photo of Blake Lively on the red carpet, who is GOALS!,” says Kate.

Kate’s budgeting tip: If you need a place to cut back on budget, pick the shoes – no one will see them!

Musical moments

In line with Kate’s love of dancing and music, there were a couple of special musical surprises throughout the day.

“For our recessional music I had the string quartet play the Star Wars theme song. It was a surprise for my husband, as we are both huge Star Wars fans, he was stoked!,” says Kate. “My dad is a musician and he and my uncle performed the Beatles song ‘Twist and Shout’ to kick off the dancing during the reception. This was another surprise – I thought he might play a sappy song, but this was so much better! I’m a huge Beatles fan and my dad pulled it off perfectly and really got the party going!”

Best Advice

Kate has three top pieces of advice for couples planning their wedding day…

  • Have a discussion early on about what is important to each of you, how much each one of you wants to be involved or what you want to be involved with. For instance, Grant couldn’t care less about flowers or theme or any of that but he wanted to pick food and what he and his groomsmen were wearing. Also, talk about budget upfront and who will pay for what so there is less heartache as your day approaches. And if you can afford it, get a good wedding planner! They make a huge difference and ease a ton of stress.
  • If you can, take your time. Our engagement was one year and 10 months. This gave us time to do some wedding stuff and then take a break, and then do some more wedding stuff, and take another break, etc. We also had first pick for every vendor we wanted – no one was already booked. I highly recommend having a long engagement. I was able to enjoy the process and wasn’t stressed to constantly be making decisions or settling for things I didn’t want. Plus, I loved being engaged.
  • An important thing to remember is that there will likely be fights, but try to remember that this day is for both of you. You can work it all out. And when the day finally arrives try to enjoy every second of it, bask in the love that you share and be surrounded by your friends and family who love you too. And if you do that, I promise it will be the BEST. DAY. EVER.

‘Modern, simple and classic’ was Talia’s design brief when researching her bridal look. She found the perfect off-the-shoulder gown and elevated the look with our gold HENRI crown and drop chain ISABEAU earrings. This classic aesthetic flowed through to the venue, décor and photo shoot. The result was a stunning setting for Talia and her husband Zac’s dream wedding day.

Los Angeles-based Talia and Zac married in Pittsburgh, which is where they originally started dating. The goal was to include aspects of both these cities in their wedding. With hints of LA glamour in the venue décor and the traditional Pittsburgh cookie table, they achieved just that.

Setting the Mood

Talia and Zac have lived in Los Angeles for 10 years, but for their wedding, they loved the idea of getting married closer to their family in Pittsburgh and having their LA friends come over to see their hometowns.

“I wanted the vibe to be a mix of ‘home’ but with an LA twist – but also fun and not stuffy,” says Talia.

However, finding the right venue in Pittsburgh was a challenge.

“I am into modern aesthetic and décor, simple and clean lines. This type of venue was seriously lacking in Pittsburgh. Everything there is very rustic or vintage… the opposite of me! I was so happy when I walked into my venue, J Verno Studios – an all-white modern venue with pops of unique furniture and décor and impressive lighting. The venue also happened to be in the exact part of the city that me and my husband started hanging out in together in 2004!”

Adventures in Gown Hunting

After scouring the internet and dress shopping in LA, it was trip to Pittsburgh where Talia made a surprising discovery about her idea of the ‘perfect dress’.

“When I started trying on dresses in LA, there were a few that I liked but I still didn’t feel like I found ‘the one’ – I was trying to sell myself on lace and sequins – the typical ‘bride’ look,” she says. “I flew back to Pittsburgh to do a dress shopping day with my mum, best friend and aunt, with zero intention of buying a wedding dress. When I was trying on dresses in Pittsburgh, someone suggested a plain silk crepe dress which I said no to for being too boring… but I tried it on anyway and kind of fell in love with the look. We headed to our second appointment of the day and after once again trying on lacey and sparkly dresses my stylist suggested a silk crepe off the shoulder Lian Carlo gown.”

As soon as Talia put on the dress everyone started crying… with happy tears! The uncomplicated beauty of the dress didn’t detract from Talia’s striking facial features – her gorgeous full lips, bold eyes and luscious dark hair.

“The major thing that attracted me to this dress was that I knew in fifty years when I was looking at photos from my wedding day, I would be in something timeless.”

Talia’s tip for dress and accessory shopping: “stay true to your aesthetic – don’t try to convince yourself to wear something that isn’t ‘you’. Your wedding day should reflect your overall look and vibe every other day of your life!”

Perfect Accessorising

While Talia’s dress was classic and timeless, she was after an overall look that was a little more edgy and cool. She achieved this with her accessorising. Talia was drawn to the bold silhouette of the HENRI crown, which features beaded spikes on top. She styled the crown with a hairstyle of classic waves with one side tucked back, therefore showing off a sparkly gold ISABEAU earring.

“The ISABEAU earrings were the perfect piece to go with the crown – I liked the cool drop style. They’re not your typical blinged out bridal earrings.”

Talia loved the bold silhouette of the HENRI crown and the cool drop style of the ISABEAU earrings.

Capturing the Moment

“I knew I wanted my photos to be a little gritty and cool on the streets of Pittsburgh – nothing too cutesy or airy,” says Talia. “I chose my photographer, Rachel Rowland, because her aesthetic was exactly what I was looking for. Her photos show emotion and are incredibly stunning. She was also voted Best Photographer in Pittsburgh! She suggested to do some photos on top of a building in an empty parking lot. I trusted her judgement – she knows what she’s talking about!”

The Pittsburgh Cookie Table

In addition to the wedding cake, the reception party was made even sweeter with a decadent cookie table. This Pittsburgh tradition of having a table full of cookies at the wedding reception is a concept we can definitely get behind!

“The old school way is that all the bride’s female family members help bake the cookies,” Talia explains. “Well, my mum just so happens to own her own baking business – Debbie’s Deluxe Cookies and Cakes. Being her first child to get married, you can imagine how excited she was! So excited that she went completely above and beyond and made 5000 cookies for the wedding (not exaggerating) – about 30 cookies per person. This entire display took an entire back wall of the venue for everything to fit. My LA friends have never heard of a cookie table at weddings so needless to say everyone was going nuts. She also made my wedding cake – it was stunning and gluten-free for me!”

Wedding Planning Advice

“Have fun with it and try not to stress (easier said than done, I was stressed the entire time!),” says Talia. “Remember that in the end, the little details do not matter and you will have the best day ever.”

You may have discovered during your wedding dress journey, the spectrum of ‘white’ and ‘ivory’ is far and wide. Not all ‘white’ tones are created equal and the same applies to ‘ivory’. The colour ‘ivory’ can vary dramatically between designers and depending on the fabric, it can range from off-white to warm ivory tones.

The majority of our brides walk down the aisle in light or medium ivory wedding gowns as these tones work well with almost all skin and hair colour tones. However, a brilliant white gown and white wedding crown will always have its place as it exudes a classic sophistication and timelessness.

A white wedding crown for Samantha

We recently worked with Canadian bride Samantha to design a white wedding crown for her elegant gown. Samantha’s wedding dress is equal parts classic and sophisticated, featuring a low V back, slightly off-the-shoulder silhouette and dramatic train.  In designing her crown, the style and silhouette of her dress became the main source of inspiration.

We love to pair a traditional white wedding dress with a silver headpiece with crystals or true white floral accents to finish the look. If your dress features a more modern silhouette or clean lines, both gold and silver tones can be worn. It depends so much on the vibe and look you’re hoping to achieve.

Ivory or white accessories for a white wedding dress?

A question we are often asked is whether a white wedding dress should be paired with white or ivory accessories. The answer really depends on the shade of white – i.e. whether the white has a cool, neutral or warm undertone.

If your dress is a cool or neutral white, it’s best to pair it with white accessories otherwise it can feel too stark in comparison and the accessory can look aged. If your dress is off-white or warmer, we like to recommend light ivory tones.

Our headpiece and veil collections can be customised in ivory or white tones, with ivory as the default colour due to popularity.  Our white flowers are a beautiful shade of neutral white with a matte porcelain-like finish.

If you aren’t sure which colour to choose, feel free to contact us directly and we would be happy to offer advice and recommendations based on any photos and samples you can send us.

Searching for a white headpiece or wedding veil?

We’d love to work with you to customise our designs in white tones to better suit your wedding dress fabrics. Feel free to send us photos of your wedding dress and bridal hairstyle.  We would love to offer advice and recommendations.

Featuring a backdrop of sweeping snow-capped mountains scattered with historic redwood trees, Lauren and Dain’s wedding ceremony was simply breathtaking. The couple always knew they wanted to get married on top of a mountain, and Glacier Point, in California’s Yosemite National Park, was the ultimate spot.

With such a majestic wedding location, Lauren’s bridal look needed to be both beautiful and practical. Her flowy lace gown was lightweight and featured godets, so she could easily climb mountains and bush walk on the day. As for accessories, Lauren wore our GABRIEL crown, which beautifully echoed the surrounding wildlife, with its clusters of clay flowers, crystal foliage and bohemian vibe. Comfortable footwear was also a must. She finished off her bridal look with very practical, brown lace-up boots!

Wedding day adventures

Lauren and Dain wanted their wedding to be romantic, adventurous, outdoorsy and intimate. The stunning vistas of waterfalls, giant sequoia trees, wildlife and cliffs at Yosemite National Park fulfilled this wedding-day vision, and gave their guests a truly unique experience.

“When I first met Dain, I was not adventurous or an ‘outdoorsy’ person,” says Lauren. “Two years after dating he took me to Yosemite, CA and I fell in love! I hadn’t been since I was about four or five years old and was in awe of Yosemite’s beauty as soon as we entered the park. We had dinner at The Majestic Yosemite Hotel and I saw a couple getting married there, and I joked that we should get married there someday. Who knew that seven years later, we would?”

Coordinating your bridal look

Time, consideration and an open mind went into creating Lauren’s gorgeous bridal look. Every detail, from the dress, to the accessories and hairstyle, was well thought through, to accentuate Lauren’s natural beauty. Her lace dress was flowy and elegant and featured chiffon godets at the bottom and buttons down the back.

“My husband always tells me my backside is one of the reasons he fell in love with me, so I knew I had to have a mermaid silhouette to show off my curves,” says Lauren. “The lace in my dress is actually flowers if you look close enough. I loved how the GABRIEL crown had gorgeous white flowers that matched my dress so perfectly. My dress also had no beading whatsoever, so I wanted something with a little bling. The crown was a modern yet timeless approach to the trendy flower crown. The pearls in the crown added an extra vintage look, which I loved. I wanted a boho feel to my hair. So, I went on Pinterest a lot!”

She decided on a half up hair style, with a modern braid and curls, topped with the GABRIEL crown.

“Tania Maras is amazing. She really does makes a little something for everyone. An extra special piece of jewellery or a headpiece to have on your wedding day makes the look. Also, I love the idea of having something to pass down to my daughter one day and this headpiece will be one of those things.”

Best wedding advice

“My advice is, don’t worry so much about pleasing other people. I feel like weddings have really gotten out of hand. There is a reason smaller weddings are the new trend. We wanted our wedding to be about us! We hand selected the people that shaped our relationship and made us the people we are today and I wouldn’t have it any other way. My second piece of advice is getting an amazing photographer. There are some things on a wedding I would say skimp on, a photographer is not one of those. For my husband and I, our pictures were the most important thing, so finding a great photographer was at the top of our list. Lastly, relax… remember you are doing this because you love each other. Have fun with it!”

Every bride is different and the vision we all have in our minds of how we’d like to look and feel on our wedding day varies so much between brides. The same wedding dress can completely transform with slight changes in accessories. If you’re looking to channel a regal and sophisticated vibe, a crown or tiara could be the way to go. Fancy a glamorous and chic look? Think long drop earrings and maybe a side swept look.

So much of this, of course, depends on your wedding dress and its neckline, your face shape and wedding hairstyle.

A bespoke floral wedding crown

We recently had the pleasure to work with bride Nancy to create her dream floral wedding crown. Nancy’s vision for her day was ultra chic and glamorous, choosing to wear an insanely glamorous wedding dress with the most beautiful floral and lace appliqué details. Its silhouette was extravagant yet timeless, and she was seeking a headpiece that pulled together all of these special qualities.

Nancy loved our GABRIEL floral halo but wanted a piece that sat in her hair more as a crown than a halo. She also sought for it to be taller and of larger proportions. We were able to take on board all of Nancy’s thoughts and feedbacks and incorporate them into a headpiece that felt balanced, proportional, and of course, beautiful.

Delicate rose appliqué details

One of our favourite details of this crown include the rose appliqué details that feature prominently across this piece. These rose elements perfectly complement the floral details on Nancy’s gown and add a timeless quality like no other flower.

When set amongst shimmering crystal details and antique silver leaf and vine elements, the silver and ivory colour palette speaks to heritage, tradition and glamour.

Customisable for you

If you love this floral wedding crown, or have your heart set on another style from our collection that isn’t quite right for your wedding dress or hairstyle, get in touch. We’d love to work with you to create the perfect crown or headpiece.
